Curlin frames vaccine side effects as evidence of the immune system doing its job, not as signs of harm. He compares the sensation to having a cold or the flu. The discomfort a person feels during those illnesses largely reflects the immune system mobilizing to fight infection, he explains, and vaccine reactions work the same way. The entire purpose of vaccination, Curlin says, is to give the immune system some low-stakes training so it is ready if the real virus appears.
Curlin divides vaccine-associated symptoms into two categories: systemic and local. Systemic symptoms include fatigue, headache, and fever, he explains, producing a general sense of feeling run down rather than a specific complaint. These symptoms are typically self-limited and resolve within a defined window. Local symptoms occur at the injection site and include tenderness, swelling, redness, and general arm soreness. Curlin notes that these symptoms should feel familiar to most patients, comparing them to the sore arm many people remember from childhood vaccines like MMR.
Curlin also highlights demographic patterns in who experiences these reactions most intensely. Side effects tend to be more common in women than men, he says, and more common in younger patients than older ones. He attributes this variation to differences in immune system responsiveness across these populations. Understanding these patterns, Curlin suggests, can help pharmacists set realistic expectations with individual patients based on age and other characteristics, reducing surprise or alarm when expected symptoms occur.
