Wicked Good Cardiometabolic Chat: Newest Updates to ADA Standards of Care

Episode 7 dives into new standards of care from the American Diabetes Association and what updates are most important for pharmacists.

In episode 7 of Wicked Good Cardiometabolic Chat, Jennifer Goldman, PharmD, CDCES, BC-ADM, FCCP, professor of pharmacy practice at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS), and Hailey Choi, PharmD, BCACP, CDCES, associate professor of pharmacy practice at MCPHS, provided a detailed breakdown of the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 Standards of Care in Diabetes.

“The ADA now states that continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is recommended at diabetes onset and any time thereafter for children, adolescents, adults on insulin therapy, but also individuals on non-insulin therapies that can cause hypoglycemia, and anyone on any diabetes treatment where CGM helps with management,” said Goldman, as she introduced some of the new standards. “This language is very intentional. When you hear ‘from onset and anytime thereafter,’ think about how this reframes CGM from rescue therapy to foundational care.”

One of the most anticipated updates for pharmacists and all other providers working closely within the diabetes space, Goldman and Choi gathered to discuss how standards of care are evolving in regard to much more than just CGMs. Aside from the shifting landscape of continuous glucose monitoring, they explored updates in type 1 diabetes screening, automated insulin delivery for type 2 diabetes, glucagon-like peptide-1s (GLP-1s), and more.

Amid ongoing pressures and the unique positioning of pharmacists in the US, it may be difficult for some to keep track of evolving diabetes guidelines in real time. For those seeking a quick but detailed look into the newest changes in diabetes, the extensive backgrounds of our hosts Goldman and Choi have you covered.
