Jennifer Goldman, PharmD, CDCES, BC-ADM, FCCP, talks about the best ways pharmacists can stay updated on advancements in diabetes medications and treatments.

Over 38 million people of all ages have diabetes and nearly 100 million adults have prediabetes in the United States.1 That number is only expected to grow, with some research estimating that 54.9 million Americans will have the condition by 2030.2

Community pharmacists play a key role in managing diabetes as they are the most accessible members of health care teams. However, because they need to be knowledgeable about a wide variety of diseases and medications, it can be difficult for pharmacists to stay on top of all the key developments in diabetes care.

Drug Topics recently sat down with Jennifer Goldman, PharmD, CDCES, BC-ADM, FCCP, professor of pharmacy practice at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, to get a better idea about the best ways that pharmacists can stay updated on advancements in diabetes medications and treatments.

“When we think about community pharmacists, they have to know everything about everything,” Goldman said. “They can’t just hyperfocus on diabetes. There’s so much education that they have to have. If they have a particular interest in diabetes or they have a lot of patients with diabetes, certainly seeking out some of that education will be helpful in keeping up to date on those medications. They can look for CE programs that are very specific, peer reviewed journal articles [or] professional organizations.”
