Wicked Good Cardiometabolic Chat: SGLT2is Offer Cardiorenal Benefits Beyond Diabetes
Episode 4 of Wicked Good Cardiometabolic Chat explores SGLT2 inhibitors and their efficacy beyond just diabetes outcomes.
As further developments are explored regarding sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, their benefits are extending well beyond treating diabetes. With a new clinical understanding amongst this drug class, it’s crucial for pharmacists to possess optimal knowledge of these drugs’ effects in order to improve patient outcomes.
“I've been a pharmacist for almost 36 years now. When I went to school, sugar in the urine was bad,” said Jennifer Goldman, PharmD, CDCES, BC-ADM, FCCP, professor of pharmacy practice at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS). “Now, we know it's a good thing leading to these cardiovascular and renal benefits as well as glycemic benefits. We're getting rid of that extra glucose, and that is what leads to that protection, but that’s also what leads to glycemic control.”
Joined alongside her cohost, Hailey Choi, PharmD, BCACP, CDCES, associate professor of pharmacy practice at MCPHS, the duo gathered to discuss the overall benefits of SGLT2is, the pharmacist’s role in managing patients’ prescriptions, and more.
Check out episode 4 of Wicked Good Cardiometabolic Chat as Goldman and Choi explore their backgrounds in managing these medications and how the evolution of pharmacy practice and drug development have led to improved diabetes outcomes and beyond.
