The Food & Drug Administration has approved deferasirox (Exjade, Novartis Pharmaceuticals) for the treatment of chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions (transfusional hemosiderosis) in adults and children age two and older. The hospitals will use the money to implement projects to reduce the number of surgical-site infections, Foley catheter-associated urinary tract infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia and central line-associated bloodstream infections, and ventriculostomy and/ or medically resistant staphylococcus infections, said PHC4 officials.
