Walgreens Co. has requested an emergency injunction to block a ban on the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products at pharmacies in San Francisco. The ban, the first of its kind in the nation, is set to take effect Oct. 1.
Walgreens says the ban is unfair because it does not apply to grocery stores or big-box stores with pharmacies such as Target or Wal-Mart. A company spokesman says the ban will not reduce smoking rates, but will simply force customers to buy tobacco products elsewhere.
