UHC awards specialty pharmacy AIDS contract

UnitedHealthcare has announced that BioScrip has been named a specialty pharmacy provider of HIV/AIDS and solid organ transplant drugs and services for its members through December 2008. Approximately 1.2 million people currently live with HIV/AIDS, with an average annual cost of treatment of more than $16,000 in drug costs alone. The annual cost for posttransplant drugs can be equally high, exceeding $13,000. In 2005 there were more than 27,000 organ transplants alone and more than 150,000 people are currently living with transplanted organs.
