Drug Topics: We’re already seeing supply chain issues with unregulated products making it into the hands of patients. How does the industry keep convenience from coming at the expense of clinical oversight?

Vanessa Slowey: Convenience and trust must go hand in hand. Making health care more convenient only matters if patients trust the experience. Convenience should never come at the expense of appropriate clinical oversight. There are safeguards in health care that exist for a reason. Clinical review, licensed providers, pharmacy standards, and FDA-approved medications all play an important role in protecting patients.

The goal is not to remove those safeguards but to remove unnecessary friction surrounding them. As health care moves more online, we see this transparency is becoming even more important. Patients want to know who's reviewing their care, where the medication comes from, and that the same standards are being maintained. Trust is what makes, and will make, modern health care work.

Drug Topics: What’s the hardest lesson to learn when scaling a business in such a regulated industry like pharmacy?

Vanessa Slowey: Well, success in health care requires balancing innovation with responsibility. Growth in health care has to be measured by more than how quickly an organization can move. You also have to maintain quality compliance, and again, that patient trust, as your business is growing.

Regulations and safeguards are fundamental to protecting patients and maintaining confidence in the health care system. I think the lesson is to build those standards into the business from the beginning, from day one, so they can grow as you grow. At the end of the day, health care is built on trust; I can't stress that more. Patients need confidence that the care they receive is safe, reliable, and held to the same standards regardless of how large an organization is or becomes.
