As part of the retail chain’s new Balance Rewards for healthy choices initiative, select Walgreens pharmacists and online chat agents will receive behavior-change training based on noted psychologist B.J. Fogg’s methodology.

The Balance Rewards program offers incentives for patients to make better choices regarding smoking cessation, chronic disease management, and exercise.

Fogg’s methodology emphasizes simple steps, or micro-habits, that lead to a healthier life. The pharmacists and online chat agents who receive the training will provide wellness coaching to patients.

“Pharmacists are respected and trusted sources for ongoing support and can help people recognize that they’re succeeding on their health care journey with small steps,” Fogg said. “That feeling of making progress can help participants form healthy habits.”

Kermit Crawford, Walgreens president of pharmacy, health, and wellness, said the behavior-change training and wellness coaching is a perfect with the chain’s Balance Rewards program. “Adopting a consistently healthy action like practicing a balanced diet, exercising more, or changing other lifestyle habits is typically not easy,” he said. “This is a perfect fit for a community pharmacy based program in which our pharmacists have frequent contact with consumers.”

The Balance Reward program focuses on the three areas of exercise and activity, managing your health, and establishing a healthy diet. “Pharmacy Chat [and pharmacist coaching] will support participants by helping them better understand the path to smoking cessation, including setting a quit date, optimally using over-the-counter and prescription medications, as well as utilizing other tools and supports,” said Harry Leider, MD, Walgreens chief medical officer.
