Social Media Best Practices for Pharmacists: Why Visibility Matters

Key Takeaways

  • Online presence now precedes in-person care-seeking, making social platforms a primary venue for establishing pharmacist credibility and shaping patient expectations.
  • Case experiences from owners, clinical specialists, and influencers show that consistent, community-relevant education can convert digital engagement into local trust and measurable foot traffic.

A guide built from conversations with pharmacists on social media and independent pharmacy owners.

Pharmacists are consistently ranked among the most trusted health care professionals in the country—but that trust doesn't stop at the counter anymore. Patients research, connect, and decide who to believe online long before they ever walk through a pharmacy's doors. This guide draws on conversations with a group of pharmacists who've built followings, community trust, and foot traffic through social media. It includes independent pharmacy owners, clinical specialists, and pharmacist influencers who've each taken a different path to the same result—becoming the trusted voice their community turns to.

Two threads run through this guide side by side: an Owner track, for pharmacy owners and managers building community and business through social media, and a Personal Brand track, for pharmacists building an individual voice and audience.

Creating Short-Form Videos

  • Post Often—ideally a few times a week. Consistency matters more than perfection.
  • Don’t Reinvent the Wheel—find Reels that are already going viral and put your own spin on them (obviously modifying them to fit your pharmacy/brand).
  • Mix It Up—a combination of educational and entertaining content works well. Not every Reel needs to teach something!
  • Get the Whole Staff Involved—Reels featuring staff tend to get higher engagement, plus it’s fun and can be great for employee morale.
  • Keep Them Short—shorter Reels generally get more engagement. People’s attention spans are short these days!
  • Make Them Humorous—the silly/funny Reels tend to perform the best. Don’t be afraid to poke fun at pharmacy life, trends, or yourselves!
  • Don’t Stress About It!—the biggest thing is just to get content out there. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and I think it’s easy to overthink Reels. Just have fun with it and post!
