Vin Gupta, MD, discusses trends and perspectives in patient data privacy as well as what a “smart pharmacy” may look like in the near future.
As medication dispensing and patient data become more centralized within health care, pharmacists will have further opportunities to manage and counsel patients to the best of their abilities. With innovative tools and collaborative programs, the pharmacy profession has potential to significantly improve patient outcomes in the near future.
Vin Gupta, MD, former Chief Medical Officer at Amazon Pharmacy and renowned US medical analyst, caught up with Drug Topics at the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) 2025 Annual Conference, held May 5 to May 7 in Scottsdale, Arizona. In this part of our interview, Gupta explored ideas behind the “smart pharmacy” of the future and the tools pharmacists may need to overcome patient data privacy challenges.
“Pharmacists can do so much, but if they’re spending most of their time dispensing and doing drug-drug interactions, less of their time actually flexing their mind and their clinical expertise, we’re never going to achieve the future vision of the modern pharmacist,” said Gupta. “The future of smart pharmacy, to me, fundamentally looks different.”
