Hybrid Pharmacist Roles Could Boost Flexibility, Satisfaction, and Staffing Solutions

Rick Gates, chief pharmacy officer at Walgreens, helps introduce his organization’s innovative new ‘hybrid pharmacist’ role.

Now rolled out in 6 states, Walgreens has officially announced its ‘hybrid pharmacist role,’ where pharmacists can practice within a mix of community practice and centralized pharmacy settings.

“I think it's exciting when we continue to innovate within the pharmacy space,” Rick Gates, chief pharmacy officer at Walgreens, told Drug Topics. “The hybrid pharmacist role allows pharmacists to practice across both community sites—which is where I practiced when I was in stores—as well as in centralized settings. It’s really helping maintain a strong relationship that you have with your customers but also supporting desire from some of our pharmacists to have very different clinical settings that they can actually go into.”

The hybrid model currently operates on a split schedule, with pharmacists typically spending 1 day in a centralized hub and 4 days in a traditional community setting. This variety is designed to combat burnout while leveraging modern infrastructure like micro-fulfillment centers to reduce the administrative burden on site.

“We developed this based off feedback from our pharmacists,” continued Gates, emphasizing that professional variety and work-life balance were primary drivers for the pilot.

By modernizing staffing alongside technology, Walgreens aims to address persistent industry-wide shortage issues. According to Gates, the early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, as the role allows pharmacists to maintain deep patient relationships in-store while enjoying the structured flexibility of a centralized clinical environment.

As the pilot expands, it signals a significant turning point in how retail pharmacy balances operational efficiency with provider satisfaction. Listen in to learn more about this emerging new role sprouting up across the retail pharmacy industry.
