How Drug Price Transparency Empowers Patients and Pharmacists | Asembia AXS26
Real-time prescription pricing and auto-applied discounts cut pharmacy counter surprises, speed therapy, and free pharmacists for patient-focused care.
Pharmaceutical manufacturer programs and real-time price transparency tools are transforming how patients access prescription medications and understand their out-of-pocket costs. Laura Jensen, chief commercial officer and president of Pharma Direct at GoodRx, explains that it’s no longer enough for discount programs to exist only online or as printable coupons. For true impact, these savings need to be seamlessly integrated into the pharmacy workflow so that discounts automatically apply at the pharmacy counter—without extra work for patients, pharmacists, or physicians.
Jensen highlights how consumerism in health care, when done well, does not undermine clinical care. Instead, it can actually strengthen it. By automating and streamlining administrative tasks—such as searching for lower-cost options, troubleshooting coverage issues, and managing coupons—pharmacists and other health care providers can spend more time on clinical decision-making and patient counseling. This shift enables pharmacists to operate at the top of their license, focusing on medication management, safety, and outcomes rather than paperwork.
A central theme is the importance of financial transparency at the point of prescribing, before the patient ever arrives at the pharmacy. Integrating price transparency tools into electronic medical records and offering direct-to-consumer resources allow prescribers and patients to have informed conversations about treatment choices in the context of real costs. This reduces churn at the pharmacy counter, shortens time to therapy, and improves the overall patient experience.
Ultimately, Jensen emphasizes that patients should experience health care access with the same ease and clarity they expect in other consumer experiences. Delivering real-time prescription price transparency, integrated manufacturer discounts, and streamlined workflows is critical to meeting rising consumer expectations and improving both affordability and outcomes.
“It’s really important that patients and healthcare providers understand exactly what the financial considerations are of a prescribing scenario before the patient actually gets to the pharmacy, because I think that's where the churn can happen,” Jensen said. “We’ve seen that for many, many years, but ultimately more transparency at the point of prescribing so that that treatment conversation can be in context with a much broader conversation is critical.”
