"In 2001, generics represented 47% of prescriptions dispensed in the U.S.; today they represent 61% and it looks like it's going to go much higher in 2007." Long said that total Rx volume increased by 4.6% industrywide in 2006, while generic prescriptions increased by 13%, three times faster than the market. On a dollar basis, the total pharmaceutical market grew by 8.3%, while the generic business grew by 22.4%.
