The Duane Reade store signals a prototype for future Duane Reade stores. Duane Reade is owned by Walgreens and has more than 250 stores in the New York City region.

Similar to efforts by Walgreens, the flagship 22,000-square-foot Duane Reade store focuses heavily on fresh food for shoppers. Store offerings include: the Sushi Station, featuring a chef and a full menu of rolls; The Juice Market, which has fresh-made smoothies; an expanded natural and organic section with fruits, vegetables, wraps, and salads made daily; a Starbucks coffee and fresh bakery counter; and a Coca-Cola “Freestyle” machine that dispenses 130 varieties of Coca-Cola fountain drinks.

“The fresh and healthy food offerings will be unparalleled within the drugstore industry,” said Paul Tiberio, senior vice president of merchandising and chief marketing officer for Duane Reade.

The flagship store is also the first Duane Reade store to feature a pharmacy “powered by Walgreens Pharmacy Network. The system will link to Walgreens pharmacy system, the largest pharmacy network in the United States,” announced a statement from Duane Reade. This link will allow out-of-state resident and visitors to have their Walgreens pharmacy information available at the Duane Reade store.

Duane Reade has also expanded its beauty offerings in this store with a LOOK Boutique that features “before and after” virtual makeovers, skin analysis from Phillips Crystalize, and an automatic fragrance sampler. The store also includes a nail salon and a hair salon.
