CMS asks for extension before issuing final rule on hospices

May 28, 2008

CMS will need more time before it issues a final rule on conditions for hospices to participate in Medicare and Medicaid.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services had originally planned on issuing a final rule regarding the conditions for hospices to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs three years after the publication date of its proposed rule. But in a notice published yesterday in the Federal Register, CMS said it will need more time to come up with the final rule. CMS explained that it needs an extension because the final rule is extremely complicated, it received a lot of comments to its proposed rule, and it needs to collaborate with several other agencies before it can finalize its regulations.
