Celebrating the Hard Work Pharmacists Do Everyday
Celebrate the vital role of pharmacists in health care this American Pharmacists Month.
Pharmacists are an indispensable part of the health care ecosystem, playing a pivotal role that extends far beyond dispensing medications. In honor of American Pharmacists Month, we wish to recognize and celebrate dedicated pharmacists who are essential to our communities’ well-being.
The traditional image of a pharmacist behind a counter is only a small part of their story. Today’s pharmacists are a vital bridge between patients and their physicians, offering crucial guidance on medication management, potential drug interactions, and proper dosage. They also provide valuable health screenings, administer immunizations, and o er counseling on managing chronic conditions.Their accessibility and expertise make them a trusted resource for Americans seeking advice and support for their health.
Pharmacists often serve as the fi rst point of contact for patients, making them a cornerstone of community health. Their work ensures that patients receive the right medications and understand how to use them safely and e ectively. This helps prevent adverse drug events and improves overall health outcomes.
In this issue, Mark Garofoli, PharmD, MBA, BCGP, CPE, CTTS, explores the delicate balance of addressing the opioid crisis while providing effective care for patients in pain. He says the solution lies in a patient-centered approach, utilizing best practices and overcoming the stigma associated with substance use disorder. We also highlight OTC pain management therapies, including medication for oral treatment, fever reduction, and topical pain relief.
Continuing with the importance of the pharmacist, we are highlighting National Immunization Awareness Month, which was celebrated in August. This issue dives into the critical role of health care professionals, particularly pharmacists, in combating vaccine hesitancy and misinformation. Ashley Gallagher explores how targeted, in-person communication can help overcome public concerns and highlight the unique position of pharmacists as a trusted, accessible source for promoting community-wide immunization.
Also, Keith Loria discusses the expanding role of pharmacists in managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He examines how pharmacists are positioned to improve patient outcomes by addressing medication costs, providing crucial education on complex inhaler techniques, and facilitating better collaboration among health care providers.
Finally, Karen Berger, PharmD, sits down with pharmacy owner Mike Brundage, PharmD, to discuss his journey to becoming an independent pharmacy owner. His focus on building trust, finding niche services, and prioritizing patient relationships allowed his small-town pharmacy to thrive and become a pillar of its community.
We wish all pharmacists a happy American Pharmacists Month and celebrate all of the hard work you do each and every day.
