Vaccine Policy Shifts Erode Patient and Parent Trust

Gretchen Garofoli, PharmD, BCACP, CTTS, FAPhA, provides her perspectives on the federal vaccine overhaul and its recent reversal in a Massachusetts federal court.

Recent legal developments have introduced significant complexity into the public health landscape, directly impacting how pharmacy professionals manage immunization protocols.

District Judge Brian E. Murphy recently ruled that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the CDC likely violated federal law during their most recent vaccination guideline updates. Consequently, US-based recommendations are now reverting to 2025 guidelines, a shift that presents immediate clinical and communicative challenges for pharmacists despite moving back toward evidence-based guidance.

“It makes it very confusing for [practitioners] on what they should believe, what is reputable information, and where they really need to go for those sound recommendations,” Gretchen Garofoli, PharmD, BCACP, CTTS, FAPhA, clinical professor at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, told Drug Topics. “And we're talking about kids, so we're talking about these parents going and looking for those recommendations. Where should they go for that information?”

The primary concern for pharmacists is the “very confusing” nature of these rapid regulatory shifts. This back-and-forth does not just complicate administrative and clinical workflows; it fundamentally erodes the foundation of trust required for effective patient counseling.

To mitigate this confusion, pharmacy professionals are encouraged to anchor their advice in established science and the guidelines provided by organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). In a professional climate where information can feel contradictory, it is critical to ensure that recommendations remain focused on rigorous, evidence-based science rather than being influenced by personal or political opinions.
