TrumpRx Promising Direct-to-Consumer Drugs for Discounted Prices

John C. Goodman, PhD, senior fellow at the Independent Institute, discusses TrumpRx and its goals for patients’ OOP drug costs.

Bypassing the need for pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and other drug supply chain entities, the newly announced TrumpRx platform is set to create significant direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales for Americans’ prescription drugs come 2026.

“Interestingly enough, individuals can get a better deal than PBMs, which are supposed to be in the business of negotiating discounts,” John C. Goodman, PhD, senior fellow at the Independent Institute and president of the Goodman Institute for Public Policy Research, told Drug Topics. “They can do better than employers, better than health plans, and that's one of the reasons why Trump is interested in promoting the DTC sales.”

The current presidential administration is essentially attempting to revamp the way prescription medications are distributed in the US. While drugs typically reach a multitude of supply chain entities before reaching the patient, the DTC TrumpRx platform is set to bypass many processes that have historically led to higher medication costs. When the program is rolled out sometime in 2026, patients’ access to prescription drugs will look different than it once did before.

In a recent interview with leading health economist John C. Goodman, Drug Topics asked him about his thoughts on TrumpRx and what the administration is trying to achieve with this new DTC approach.

Get insights into what health care economy experts believe may be a game-changing new development that could impact millions of patients, providers, businesses, and products across health care. Also, stay tuned for more from our conversation with Goodman, who dove deeper into TrumpRx, what it means for pharmacies and pharmacists, and just how successful the platform may be heading into 2026.
