
The Shift to Cloud-Based Pharmacy Systems Modernizes Patient Care

Although digital transformation has modernized hospitals’ administrative systems, like billing and electronic health records (EHRs), medication management remains stuck in the past because these tools fail to track the physical journey of drugs across expanding health care networks.1
During this week’s episode of the Over the Counter podcast, Rick Couldry, MS/HSPA, senior vice president and chief pharmacy and clinical officer at Omnicell, explained that medication management has fallen behind other administrative systems. He noted that EHRs are primarily documentation tools designed to record order entries and confirm whether a patient received a drug, but they do not track where a medication was stored, how long it was stored there, or who moved it from place to place.
This lack of real-time visibility is increasingly dangerous as health care networks expand to include procedural suites, clinics, radiology units, ambulatory programs, and patients’ homes. This tracking gap represents a massive operational bottleneck because medications are typically a health system’s second-highest or fastest-growing expense.1

Trimming the Landscaping
To explain the growth of these isolated systems, Couldry used a landscaping analogy, comparing vendor-specific point solutions with home landscaping that has overgrown and become complicated over 10 years. He argued that a cloud-native platform provides the digital backbone to “trim the hedges,” centralizing these fragmented systems to establish a consistent user experience.1
This integration is critical because administrative burdens lead to high error rates, with 1 in 4 medical records containing identity mistakes.
