Marta Wosinska, PhD, and Joey Mattingly, PharmD, MBA, PhD, joined Drug Topics to help us understand how pharmaceutical tariffs could potentially impact the pharmacy industry.
As their impacts on American businesses are still being understood, the potential role US tariffs may play within the US pharmaceutical market could have detrimental impact on both patients as well as the pharmacies and pharmacists that dispense medications.
“If there's a tariff, somebody is going to have to absorb it. Somebody is going to have to pay for it,” said Marta Wosinska, PhD, senior fellow with The Brookings Institution. “The question [is] who is it going to be? Is it going to be the manufacturer? Does it get passed through to the pharmacy? How much can the pharmacy pass it through to the payer, or for that matter, to the patient? So, it's going to be absorbed somewhere.”
Wosinska joined Drug Topics in the most recent episode of Over the Counter. She also brought with her a colleague, Joey Mattingly, PharmD, MBA, PhD, associate professor and vice chair of research at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. Both experts dug deep into the potential impact pharmaceutical tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration may have on pharmacies and the prescription drug market as a whole.
“I think in the short run, this is going to be impactful in terms of pharmacists figuring out are their margins going to shrink for different drugs,” Mattingly told Drug Topics. “And how might it impact across brands versus generics? There could be differentials there.”
Listen to our full-length discussion with Wosinska and Mattingly as they team up to help break down the constant uncertainty that has surrounded pharmaceutical tariffs.
