The Cost-Effective Nature of IV Compounding Robotics | ASHP Midyear 2025
Lani Bertrand, RPh, discusses Omnicell’s IV compounding solution and how it’s realizing cost savings for pharmacies across the country.
With the introduction of robotics, the normal processes behind IV sterile compounding have changed dramatically, giving pharmacies time, resources, and money back to focus on other areas of their practice.
“If we look at drugs that are oftentimes on that drug shortage list, that then forces pharmacy leaders to pivot and go to the 503D vendors for outsourcing, which does add to the cost of procurement,” Lani Bertrand, RPh, senior director of clinical marketing and thought leadership at Omnicell, told Drug Topics. “We do have a health system customer who's been utilizing our IV robotics solution and has realized nearly $3 million in savings—approximately $2.8 million—by the implementation of IV robotics in their sterile compounding program.”
At the 2025 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition, we met with Bertrand to learn more about the current behind-the-scenes developments of IV compounding robotics. From regulatory barriers to the significant progress robotics has made within this space, Bertrand shared why she and her team believe solutions like this can be a standard of care in the near future.
Furthermore, Bertrand explains the importance of efficacy within compounding and how newly designed robotics solutions can save pharmacies money while simultaneously avoiding any room for potential medical errors. Learn from Bertrand and her partners to understand how robotics and IV compounding as a whole are evolving in real time.
“There was a time when we would ride in cars without seat belts, and it was years of legislation and enforcement and education, and now I don't think any of us would think about jumping in a car without clicking in our seat belt,” she concluded. “It would be great to get to a state where the use of IV robotics is a standard of care.”
