Tech-Driven Home Pharmacy Model Tackles Rural Health Crises
With the dual issue of pharmacy deserts and caregiver shortages across the US, technology is filling a much-needed gap for rural patient populations.
When Mayor Alicia Pearson took office in Lanesboro, Minnesota, a community of just 800 people with little-to-no pharmacy access, she refused to accept the status quo. Unable to recruit health care providers in a town too small to offer a meaningful return on investment, she started networking for alternatives.
This led a variety of stakeholders within health care to come together, create meaningful partnerships, and form the Rural Health Innovation Initiative.
In this episode of Over the Counter, Lisa Lavin, founder, chairman, and CEO of Ōmcare, walks through how the initiative is using her organization’s Home Health Hub to bring pharmacy services directly into the homes of rural patients who would otherwise drive more than 30 miles for a prescription refill.
The model pairs Ōmcare home health technology—which is an all-in-one in-home device that automates medication dispensing, tracks adherence, and provides one-touch 24/7 pharmacist access—with PharMerica’s concierge pharmacy services. The initiative includes pre-sorted dose pouches, medication synchronization, monthly nurse check-ins, and round-the-clock clinical support.
Lavin also addresses the broader crisis the initiative is designed to confront: 46% of US counties have at least one pharmacy or health care desert while there is a caregiver shortage accelerating as the population ages. With 11,000 Americans turning 65 every day and the caregiver-to-senior ratio expected to drop to 3-to-1 within the next few years, the traditional model of care is simply unsustainable.
For pharmacists and pharmacy professionals curious about where remote care and pharmacy integration are heading, this conversation offers one of the most compelling real-world examples yet of what that future looks like, with the help of key partnerships throughout health care.
