Pharmacies Should Be Proactive in Expanding Clinical Services, Reimbursement Pathways | NCPA 2025

Jennifer Griffin, PharmD, MS, clinical pharmacist at Harps Food Stores, Inc, discusses the basis of having reimbursement pathways in community pharmacy that consistently generate revenue.

With pharmacists gradually providing more clinical services, as well as the greater health care community noticing pharmacists’ value, introducing more billable services for patients at community pharmacies is becoming crucial in managing an independent business.

However, with each state in the country offering specific guidelines on what can and cannot be billed for, it’s important for community pharmacies to do their due diligence in establishing further reimbursement pathways.

“A big question that I get is ‘What can I actually bill for?’” Jennifer Griffin, PharmD, MS, clinical pharmacist at Harps Food Stores, Inc, told Drug Topics. “That’s going to vary state to state. People from multiple different states ask, ‘Well, what can I bill for?’ You’re going to have to refer them.”

As Griffin explains, each pharmacy operating in any of the 50 US states is going to experience different opportunities and hurdles when it comes to establishing new reimbursement streams. From her meetings with Harps Food Store Pharmacies and through continuing education sessions, she says it’s all about pharmacies asking of themselves the proper questions for what services they’d like to provide their patients.

In her most recent continuing education session, hosted at the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) 2025 Annual Convention & Expo, Griffin discussed medical billing lingo and the importance of implementing revenue cycle strategies that work.

In part 2 of our interview with her, Griffin dove into the variety of clinical services pharmacies are beginning to provide and the simple but beneficial approaches toward implementing new clinical services in community pharmacies for everyday patients. Get insights from Griffin as she provides details on how her pharmacy group has transformed its ability to stay financially sustainable amid a struggling pharmacy business model.
