NACDS awards highest honors to industry leaders at annual meeting
The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) recognized Charles Vance Burnett, JD, BS Pharm, and Stanley F. Barshay, with its highest honors at the 2010 annual meeting in Palm Beach, Fla.
The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) recognized Charles Vance Burnett, JD, BS Pharm, and Stanley F. Barshay, with its highest honors at the 2010 annual meeting in Palm Beach, Fla.
Burnett, senior vice president, pharmacy of Costco Wholesale dba Costco Pharmacies, received the Sheldon W. Fantle Lifetime Achievement Award. Barshay, former chairman of Schering-Plough Consumer Health Care Products, was honored with the Robert B. Begley Award.
A U.S. military veteran and pharmacy leader since the 1950s, Burnett has held several positions within the industry and beyond, including time at FedMart and Save Mart Supermarkets. He played a large role in opening the first Costco Pharmacy in 1986 and overseeing the opening and operations of the nearly 500 other locations. He is the only individual to receive both the NACDS Harold W. Pratt Award as well as the Sheldon W. Fantle Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Lifetime Achievement Award – established in 1989 – was renamed in 1996 in honor of the late Sheldon “Bud” Fantle of People’s Drug Stores.
Barshay has been an influential member of the consumer products industry since the mid-1970s, including his work at American Home Products and his service as chairman, consumer health products of Schering-Plough. During his time there, Barshay was a leader in the consumer home and healthcare products and the prescription-to-OTC revolution.
The Begley Award, established in 1980, is named in memory of former NACDS Chairman of the Board Robert B. Begley, and it honors an individual who possess qualities of great personal warmth, generous spirit, and long-time service to the industry.
“These two gentlemen are excellent examples of pharmacy’s growth and progress over the last 30 years,” commented NACDS president and chief executive officer Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE. “Charles Burnett and Stan Barshay always will mean a tremendous amount to their companies and to this industry, and these awards commemorate their powerful legacies.”
