Emerging SARS-CoV-2 Variants

In its next live webinar event, MJH Life Sciences™ COVID-19 Coalition will explore emerging mutations of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Multiple COVID-19 variants are circulating globally. In the United Kingdom (UK), a new variant named B.1.1.7 has emerged as a seemingly more contagious form of SARS-CoV-2. However, there is no evidence that the variant causes more severe illness or increased risk of death. Another variant in South Africa called B.1.351 emerged independently of the variant detected in the UK; however, the variant shares some mutation with the one detected in the UK.

Scientists are working to learn more about these variants. On January 26, 2021, at 6 PM ET, a panel of frontline experts including a virologist, epidemiologist, and an immunologist will discuss key considerations regarding the emerging variants.

Hosted by Dr. Carlos del Rio, the live event will address:

  • How these variants emerged,
  • whether these variants are more transmissible or cause more serious disease,
  • what the public response should be, and
  • whether the developed vaccines provide coverage against these variants.
