Criminals targeting online pharmacies

Online pharmacy sales during the past year tripled to $12 billion.

Consumers are not the only people interested in online pharmacies. Criminals are increasingly using the venues to unload potentially-dangerous, counterfeit medicines, according to a report in InformationWeek.

While the number of online pharmacies has declined slightly, online pharmacy sales during the past year tripled to $12 billion. That has attracted criminals. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration warned that some people who ordered Ambien, Xanax, Lexapro, and Ativan online received fake medications that contained a powerful anti-psychotic drug.
