Community Pharmacies Provide Frontline Support For Wound Management
Community pharmacists deliver fast wound assessment, OTC guidance, and prevention tips, supporting safe healing when clinics are closed and care feels urgent.
In communities across the United States, help for everyday injuries is often just a short drive—or even a short walk—away. Nearly 90% of Americans live within 5 miles of a community pharmacy, making pharmacists some of the most accessible health care professionals in the country. Although many people think of pharmacies primarily as places to fill prescriptions or pick up over-the-counter pain relievers, they are increasingly becoming front-line destinations for immediate, practical care, especially when it comes to wound management.
That accessibility means pharmacists are often the first professionals people turn to when something goes wrong at home—whether it’s a kitchen burn, a cut from yardwork, or a child’s scraped knee. These encounters may seem routine, but they can be critical moments that determine whether a wound heals quickly and safely or worsens into an infection or emergency room visit.
In this context, the role of the community pharmacist goes far beyond simply pointing patients toward a shelf of bandages. Pharmacists are assessing injuries on the spot, asking how and when they occurred, and determining whether they can be managed with OTC treatments or require urgent medical attention. For minor wounds, they guide patients through evidence-based first aid—cooling a fresh burn, selecting an appropriate burn gel with a topical anesthetic, choosing the right dressing, and explaining how to care for the wound at home. They also reinforce treatment plans for patients already under a physician’s care, ensuring dressings, topical medications, and follow-up instructions are understood and followed.
Nadia Maqbool Ahmad, PharmD, District Engagement Lead Pharmacist at Walgreens discusses how community pharmacist can turn these everyday encounters into an essential component of patient care.
