CMS to adjust DMEPOS claims amounts and revise accreditation requirements

Article

CMS plans to begin processing all claims no later than July 28.

Because the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, passed on July 15, has delayed the durable medical equipment, prosthetics, and orthotics supplies (DMEPOS) competitive bidding program, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said it would pay for DMEPOS items, retroactive to June 30, using the standard fee schedule amounts. CMS added that it would begin processing all claims no later than July 28. Any claims that were held will be processed no later than Aug. 4. Suppliers may need to take the initiative to alert their contractor to claims that should be adjusted. In other news, CMS said that as a result of the delay to the DMEPOS bid program, the special accreditation deadlines previously established for the second round of the bidding have been canceled. Suppliers need not be accredited or have applied for accreditation by July 21 to be eligible to submit a bid for the second round of the competitive bidding. Nor do they have to obtain accreditation by Jan 14, 2009, to be eligible for a second round contract. Both of these deadlines have been canceled.
