Building Pharmacist Confidence With CGM Technology

Pharmacists can build confidence with CGMs through hands-on experience, continuing education, and strong support from employers, peers, and manufacturers.

Pharmacists’ comfort with continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) can vary greatly and is shaped by factors such as personal experience, workplace exposure, and formal training. Historically, diabetes technology was not part of the PharmD curriculum beyond basic glucometer use or point-of-care testing. While CGMs are becoming more accessible, rapid market turnover with new devices or upgrades every 6 to 12 months makes it challenging to stay current.

Familiarity often grows when pharmacists encounter these devices frequently in practice or have personally used one. Continuing education and hands-on experience such as wearing a device can significantly improve confidence. The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) now offers toolkits, quick guides, and dedicated training to integrate CGMs into pharmacy workflows. Manufacturers also contribute by providing educational devices, patient resources, and direct support.

Expanding CGM education into pharmacy school curricula would give new graduates a stronger foundation. Employers can support practicing pharmacists by funding continuing education, encouraging peer-to-peer learning, and fostering relationships with manufacturers. With the right exposure, training, and support, pharmacists can be better equipped to counsel patients on these rapidly evolving technologies.

Drug Topics® recently sat down with Morgan Stewart, PharmD, BCACP, BC-ADM, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Texas at Austin, to discuss how confident most pharmacists are when it comes to explaining CGM technology, what contributes to that comfort or discomfort, and strategies or tools that can help pharmacists stay up to date with evolving CGM technology and best practices.
