American Pharmacists Month: Pharmacy Education Adapting to Evolving Pharmacist Profession
Exploring the evolution of pharmacy education throughout his professional career, Brad Phillips, PharmD, BCACP, joined Over the Counter to discuss trends in pharmacy students’ career paths.
Pharmacists throughout the US have demonstrated their unique and invaluable abilities in providing engaging, clinical services for patients in their communities. As pharmacists’ roles in health care transform to being more clinically driven, so too are pharmacy students and their aspiring career paths.
“In this day and age, pharmacy students are entering the profession with a little bit more of a broader and dynamic vision of what they want to do in their future career,” Brad Phillips, PharmD, BCACP, told Drug Topics. “Now, community pharmacy still remains a very common path and many students are increasingly being drawn to more clinical environments where they can apply their knowledge in more of a direct patient care setting.”
Phillips, who’s a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, joined Drug Topics on the most recent episode of Over the Counter to discuss his perspectives on pharmacy education and pharmacy students’ common and non-traditional career paths, as well as everything in between. More importantly, he joined us during American Pharmacists Month to both celebrate the profession as a whole but also to highlight the future generation of pharmacists.
“Ambulatory care, hospital pharmacy, and specialty practices, such as oncology, cardiology, infectious disease fellowships, they definitely seem to be gaining popularity due to their collaborative nature and impact on patient outcomes,” he continued. “There's also a noticeable interest in non-traditional roles that I feel have been emerging over the last couple years, including health informatics, pharmaceutical industry positions, regulatory affairs, and managed care, to name a few.”
From experiential learning in pharmacy school curriculums to the pharmacy roles students are most attracted to, Phillips provided Drug Topics with a full breakdown of today’s pharmacy education landscape. Listen through the full-length conversation to get his perspectives and insights on the future generation of pharmacy professionals.
