American Pharmacists Month: Clinical Service Expansion Benefits Patient Outcomes, Pharmacist Profession

Alyssa Mack, PharmD, pharmacist at Gibbs Pharmacy and Compounding Center, discusses how expanding clinical services can simultaneously benefit patients and the pharmacy profession.

Putting a focused priority on expanding clinical services within community pharmacy practice serves as a dual benefit for patients in the community and the pharmacy profession. If patients can experience improved outcomes from pharmacist-led services, the profession itself will, in turn, garner a more notable perception across the health care sector.

“It's really a win-win because the patients are winning, but so are the pharmacists who are providing these services,” Alyssa Mack, PharmD, pharmacist at Gibbs Pharmacy and Compounding Center in Lebanon, Tennessee, told Drug Topics. “It's what we're trained to do, and we don't always get the opportunity to do that.”

Mack joined Drug Topics to celebrate American Pharmacists Month throughout October. In part 3 of our interview with her, she explained the overarching benefits of adding more and more billable services within community pharmacy practice.

“I just think it's a win-win all around,” she continued. “Your patients win because there's one more place that they can go to for these services and get care that they might not be able to easily access elsewhere.”

Amid workforce and reimbursement challenges persisting in the pharmacy industry, finding simple and convenient approaches to provide better service and generate more revenue is key for thriving community pharmacies. Hear from Mack, who’s experienced first-hand the benefits of focusing more on engaging with patients and improving all aspects of their health.
