Calvin Hunsicker, founder & chief product officer at SureCost, discusses ongoing pharmacy procurement challenges in 2025 and how his company is helping businesses tackle common obstacles.

While many trends within the business of pharmacy have led to retroactive “firefighting” as issues arise, technology has evolved and systems have risen to ensure pharmacies are more proactive when it comes to purchasing and procurement.

“Purchasing has really been, I would call, firefighting of late. They're dealing with things that come up, and addressing them as they come up, as opposed to really having a strategy for managing procurement as a whole,” said Calvin Hunsicker, founder and chief product officer at SureCost. “Because of that, I think there's a lot of missed opportunity. In 2025, pharmacies that thrive will be the ones that really can align their strategy and actually execute on that strategy, versus those organizations that are doing that firefighting.”

Highlighting the benefits of turning pharmacy purchasing from reactive to proactive, Hunsicker joined Drug Topics to explore his company’s 2025 Smarter Purchasing Report and the exciting opportunities for pharmacy businesses to leap ahead with the use of SureCost’s procurement tools. He also dove into the myriad of programs, technologies, and initiatives that SureCost offers to improve pharmacy margins, reduce wasted spend, and increase operational efficiency.

“Having tools to really manage those complexities, it takes time,” he continued. “You want to have the visibility to make good decisions, and then you want to actually, based on that, be able to execute on those decisions.”

Learn more about proven approaches to pharmacy purchasing and procurement from Hunsicker as he provides key insights into how his company is eliminating the struggles of firefighting in today’s pharmacy landscape.
