Pharmacy Ownership Workshops and Boot Camps at NCPA

Programs promote pharmacy ownership at the NCPA Annual Conference.

Current and future pharmacists are learning about pharmacy ownership at the NCPA Annual Conference, which is going on now in Orlando. The educational workshops and boot camps are for anyone who has considered owning their own pharmacy.

The NCPA Pharmacy Ownership Workshops have been sponsored for the last eight years by McKesson. This year, the company added support for the Student Ownership Boot Camp Series. The workshops and boot camp are conducted by McKesson’s RxOwnership team.

More than half of participants in previous Pharmacy Ownership Workshops now own their own pharmacies.

Both programs are aimed at teaching pharmacists and student pharmacists the ins and outs of owning a pharmacy, providing necessary tools, and enhancing the management skills they need as an owner. The student program fosters interest in ownership of community pharmacies, along with entrepreneurship in future pharmacists, according to a company statement.

“McKesson RxOwnership is dedicated to supporting the future of pharmacy ownership by giving pharmacists the knowledge, support, and tools required to achieve their ownership goals,” said Chris Cella, National Vice President, McKesson RxOwnership. “We are particularly excited to expand our partnership with NCPA to include both current and future pharmacists.”

In the last year, RxOwnership has helped more than 400 owners in launching a new pharmacy. The team also assists in helping people buy or sell a pharmacy. Since 2008, the RxOwnership team has aided in the ownership-transfer process for more than 4,000 pharmacies. McKesson also has a program to empower women who want to own a pharmacy: Women in Pharmacy-Own It.

This year, McKesson sponsored 26 NCPA Foundation Presidential Scholarships, designed to recognize leadership qualities and academic accomplishments in student pharmacists.
