Joey Mattingly, PharmD, MBA, PhD, and Marta Wosinska, PhD, discussed what pharmacy businesses can do to prepare for the potential implementation of tariffs on pharmaceutical products.

While not yet imposed—and with great uncertainty regarding widespread implementation—many pharmacy industry experts are scrambling to understand the true impact of pharmaceutical tariffs should they be enacted. However, until they are widespread across the country, experts are urging pharmacies to advocate against these tariffs while also preparing for their implementation.

“I do think pharmacists need to be vocal [in] explaining their position, because pharmacists are often not the lawyer in these markets when we're talking about this” said Joey Mattingly, PharmD, MBA, PhD, associate professor and vice chair of research at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. “We often hear of the payer, the insurance companies, pharmacy benefit managers. The pharmacies themselves are relatively small from a general lobbying perspective, and their voices may not be as loud.”

Along with Marta Wosinska, PhD, senior fellow with The Brookings Institution, Mattingly joined Drug Topics to discuss the potential overall impact of pharmaceutical tariffs as well as how they will reach pharmacy businesses. With so much uncertainty on whether or not these tariffs will be passed, they believe it’s never too late to begin advocating for the pharmacy industry and speaking with government officials to avoid any detrimental policies to US health care.

Learn about Mattingly and Wosinska’s expert insights regarding the US prescription drug market and how pharmacies fall into place within it all.
