Pharmacies Should Keep Pace With Changing Technology | NCPA 2025

Tara Pfund, PharmD, chief strategy officer with Cascadia Pharmacy Group, discusses the importance of pharmacy businesses to understand evolving and emerging health care technology.

As many corners of society increasingly engage with technology inside and outside of the health care sector, community pharmacies are also compelled to adapt their knowledge regarding emerging technologies that can increase the efficiency and revenue of their business.

“We have to keep up with the changing era of technology,” Tara Pfund, PharmD, chief strategy officer with Cascadia Pharmacy Group, told Drug Topics. “Patients are getting more and more used to using their phone and using apps and having that process.”

Pfund caught up with us at the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) 2025 Annual Convention & Expo to provide further insights on her meeting presentation titled “Leveraging Technology to Optimize Pharmacy Workflows.” In our discussion with her, Pfund shared her advice for getting started with specific resources in pharmacy technology and addressed the current state of community pharmacy practice.

According to her, establishing the proper technological framework is crucial for community pharmacy sustainability. As Pfund stated, patients are regularly gravitating toward the convenience of technology within their health care journeys. If pharmacies can tap into their community members’ increasingly growing use of technology, pharmacists can exhibit the value they can provide to patients on an everyday basis.

Learn from Pfund as she breaks down the overall importance of technology for running a pharmacy business that not only provides a breadth of clinical services but one that also delivers on profit and revenue goals.
