Independent Pharmacist on Navigating the Dynamic Pharmacy Profession
Benjamin Jolley, PharmD, pharmacist at Jolley’s Compounding Pharmacy in Salt Lake City, Utah, discussed the state of independent pharmacy.
As an advocate for community pharmacy practices across the US, Benjamin Jolley, PharmD, pharmacist at Jolley’s Compounding Pharmacy in Salt Lake City, Utah, is focused on furthering the profession and getting pharmacists what they need to provide valued care to their communities. Jolley sat down with Drug Topics to discuss his career journey as well as the issues facing pharmacy that he is working to correct and alleviate on a daily basis.
“Community pharmacy practice in general is really, really tough from a financial standpoint, [from] a business-owner perspective. But also, that translates into, for anyone who works in a chain retail site, the margins on prescriptions are not what they were 10 years ago, even for the largest pharmacies,” he said.
As many experts know, declining reimbursements and workforce burnout—among many other issues—are significantly impacting the fabric of the pharmacy profession. Jolley discussed these challenges and how congressional action is the only way to turn the page on this chapter of pharmacy’s history.
