How the Pharmacist Views Expansion of Clinical Role
Through her work with Prosper Rx Consulting, Ashley Kay Pendrick, PharmD, discusses the expansion of pharmacists’ roles beyond medication dispensing.
Amid the growing need for personalized medicine following events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacists have made their clinical authority known and are working hard to prove their roles within the greater health care team. As these roles continue to expand, and as more evidence of improved patient outcomes is released, other entities within health care are recognizing the immense patient benefits pharmacists provide.
“Overall, in the last...7 years, I feel like the health systems, hospital systems, and more private practices and medical practices are recognizing that pharmacists can help in solving some of these real-world problems, not just for physicians, but for their patients,” said Ashley Kay Pendrick, PharmD, owner of Prosper Rx Consulting.
Pendrick, who has a wealth of experience in the pharmacy industry, has been operating consulting services with Prosper Rx since 2019. For more than 5 years, she has been connecting pharmacists, patients, clinicians, and other health care providers to streamline care and improve patient outcomes in the communities she works with.
She joined Drug Topics to discuss her work at Prosper Rx, how the pharmacist's role has evolved throughout her career, and the opportunities other pharmacy professionals can take advantage of to expand their scopes and become true clinical team players.
“We’re seeing...nurses, leadership, and health plans all looking to consider these pharmacist additions, moving them from that dispensing role to the true clinical partnership,” she continued. “I feel like that’s what we were trained to do.”
