Rick Sage, Executive Vice President of Innovation & Standards at NCPDP, discusses his role and how his team is using innovation to support the pharmacy profession.

Through new data, technology, connectivity, and so much more, the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) is working closely with pharmacists and other health care providers to connect pharmacies with opportunities for improving patient care.

At NCPDP’s 2025 Annual Conference, Drug Topics was joined by Rick Sage, Executive Vice President of Innovation & Standards at NCPDP. With his background in the pharmaceutical industry, he provided expert insights into how drug programs are using innovative technologies to improve their bottom lines and streamline patient care.

“Well, innovation is a really broad category,” Sage told Drug Topics. “We’ve been continually evolving in the pharmacy to address how to be more efficient and more effective with, not only just processing prescriptions, but the entire medication management within the pharmacy industry.”

From the time a prescription is written to the patient receiving their medication, NCPDP is working closely to develop tools and resources to improve the patient’s journey. Watch part 1 of our interview with Sage and stay tuned for more as he dives deeper into artificial intelligence and where it fits into an ever-evolving pharmacy landscape.
