Dispensing Leadership: The Dominoes Are Falling in Community Pharmacy

Bjorndal and McCullough are back for the 7th installment of Dispensing Leadership; this time, taking a bit of a different approach for their topic of discussion. While insights from the duo’s previous episodes could be applied in the past, present, and future, today’s episode focuses on current trends in retail pharmacy and how events like increased Rite Aid store closures may impact leadership within the industry.

“I am alert to pharmacy closings and how those are like dominoes being knocked over,” said McCullough. “What I would point out is I believe that when we knock one over, it gives the capacity for other dominoes to get knocked down as well. With this, we need to be so alert to it because there's absolutely things that are within our control that we need to be aware of and we need to be ready to do something about.”

Touching on recent retail pharmacy events and how they impact pharmacy leadership, McCullough and Bjorndal centered their conversation on dominoes, which are a simple yet powerful symbol for highlighting the industry-arching impacts of pharmacy closures and other related events. “You have one domino that falls and what's going to happen when it hits that next domino is it could very easily knock that next domino over as well, if we don't have the right leadership in place,” continued McCullough.
