New mobile app allows patients to interact with healthcare professionals.

University of Maryland Health Partners (UMHP), Total Health Care, and emocha Mobile Health, plan to expand innovative Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) treatment to patients taking prescription medication for Type 2 diabetes.

On Dec. 11th, the entities officially announced their partnership and release of a mobile smartphone application that will allow patients to upload daily recorded videos of themselves ingesting their prescribed medications. According to the press release, each patient will be paired with an “Adherence Coach” who will review the videos, via a secure access portal, to assess if the patient is taking their medication as prescribed and offer encouragement throughout the treatment cycle.

To further encourage medication adherence through this program, the companies are offering a $100 gift card to patients that achieve a minimum medication adherence by regularly uploading videos to emocha Mobile Health’s servers.

In addition to keeping up with their medications, patients will also be able to report any detected side effects, or other complications and concerns throughout the treatment cycle. Total Health Care, a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in the Baltimore, Maryland area will provide additional support and clinical resources to patients throughout the program.

This development comes in a recent line of success for emocha Mobile Health. Previously, the company developed DOT programs for patients undergoing Tuberculosis treatment that have garnered praise from the CDC and peer-reviewed Oxford Academic Open Form for Infectious Disease.

By partnering with UMHP, emocha Mobile Health will gain access to an extensive history of strong doctor-patient relationships, as well as a Medicaid Manage Care Organization with 200 employees and 48,000 members across Maryland and Baltimore city.

The program is currently accepting applications at umhp.emocha.com. Instructions for downloading the personalized application will be sent after enrollment completion.
