Connecting Pharmacists, Medical Providers Through Collaborative Care
Owner of Avant Pharmacy, and President of the Avant Institute of Clinical Pharmacy, Amina Abubakar, PharmD, AAHIVP, discussed how her work in the industry is reaching far beyond the pharmacy counter.
After getting her feet wet as owner of Avant Pharmacy in 2009, Amina Abubakar, PharmD, AAHIVP, was determined to expand her scope as a pharmacist and founded the Avant Institute of Clinical Pharmacy in 2017. Created as a resource for pharmacy workers to gain deeper knowledge of clinical services, it is the perfect example of an independent pharmacist setting themselves a part within the profession and seeking further opportunities to provide collaborative care.
“We started getting more attention from medical providers, saying, ‘Hey, we are kind of intrigued with this Avant Institute as well, and we spoke to a particular physician that you guys have a pharmacist embedded there. Can you walk us through the risks [and] compliance of doing that?’” Abubakar told Drug Topics. “And so what we found during this journey is pharmacists want to work with medical providers. It's a dream to work in a collaborative care team.”

From the clinical services explored in Avant Institute programming to the opportunities pharmacists are given through this initiative, she explained how her hopes within the pharmacy profession have evolved throughout her career.
“There are many awesome pharmacists that I've met around the country that have different niche opportunities of clinical collaborations that they offer,” continued Abubakar. “Be a part of it. Of course, we have resources on Avant Institute. Reach out, learn, and we can all grow together.”
