Community Pharmacists’ Delegation of Revenue Cycle Management Tasks | NCPA 2025

Revenue cycle management (RCM) is a financial process used by health care providers that are billing and collecting payments for clinical services.¹ While the simple and mundane tasks related to RCM are crucial for community pharmacy businesses, the proper prioritization of these processes and ensuring employees understand RCM can also significantly benefit these locations.

“There are a lot of hats that pharmacists wear, but I would honestly say that this is a hat that pharmacists don't have to wear when it comes to RCM,” Jennifer Griffin, PharmD, MS, clinical pharmacist at Harps Food Stores, Inc, told Drug Topics. “In all of my talks, I talk about, within that RCM process, that's something that can be handed off to a technician. It's not something that the pharmacist has to have complete control over because a lot of that process is more administrative tasks.”

In part 3 of our interview with Griffin, she explored the world of RCM processes in community pharmacy and tapped into her expertise in working with other pharmacy locations.

Discussing the many duties clinical and community pharmacists have taken on since events like the COVID-19 pandemic, she explored the current state of RCM, what pharmacists should understand amid the entire process, and the overall state-by-state knowledge regarding which clinical services pharmacists have authority to bill for.

“From my experience with RCM, it also doesn't have to be time-consuming,” she continued. “Once you get your processes [figured] out, which it may take a little bit of time in the beginning, but like everything, it's going to become easier with time.”
