Quality improvement organizations (QIOs), which are state-based groups charged with improving the health care for Medicare beneficiaries, must meet new criteria and standards, under a notice posted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the July 21 Federal Register. The criteria cover such subjects as improving drug safety, preventing influenza through vaccination, ensuring continuity of care when patients transition from one setting to another, and other areas. Comments on the notice should be sent to CMS no later than Aug. 20.
