CMS picks WellPoint for low-income program

CMS has selected WellPoint to administer its point-of-sale Part D enrollment program for low-income subsidized Medicare beneficiaries.

CMS has announced that UniCare Life and Health Insurance Co., a subsidiary of WellPoint, will administer the Point-of-Sale Facilitated Enrollment (POS FE) process. The program is designed to provide immediate coverage at the point of sale to qualified low-income Medicare beneficiaries who have not enrolled in a Part D program. Since 2006, more than 80,000 beneficiaries have used the program. In October, CMS announced that WellPoint-affiliated companies were the only firms to bid below the benchmark in all regions for Part D prescription drug plans, underscoring the affordability of the company's Part D plans in all 50 states.
