Athena Rae Roesler, MPH, and Anna Lin-Schweitzer, MPH, from the Milken Institute, discuss pharmacists’ role as essential care partners that improve a variety of health concerns for their community’s patients.

While the pharmacist’s role in the greater community has seemingly touched all aspects of health care, their role in being critical public health access points is especially paramount within spaces surrounding chronic disease as well as mental and reproductive health.

“Pharmacies are uniquely positioned to meet patients where they are, providing trusted, accessible care that can close gaps, improve outcomes, and ultimately reduce costs,” said Athena Rae Roesler, MPH, director of Milken Institute Public Health. “Alignment across payers, providers, and policymakers, which is already very much underway, will set up pharmacies to be central partners and advancing whole-person care to get us to the health outcomes we really need.”

Placing the whole-person-health approach at the forefront, Roesler was joined by her colleague, Anna Lin-Schweitzer, MPH, associate director of Feeding Change at Milken Institute, to host a presentation at the Total Pharmacy Solutions Summit Fall 2025 event. The duo hosted a session titled “Caring for the Whole Person: Expanding Pharmacy-Based Services in Chronic Disease, Mental Health, and Reproductive Services.”

From detailed research reports and current trends in pharmacy storefronts to opportunities and barriers for increasing whole-person health services, Roesler and Lin-Schweitzer provided insightful ways to explore actionable strategies for really driving pharmacy profit and valued care. In an excitement-driven session covering all of the opportunities in pharmacies, as well as the challenges that can be overcome, the Milken Institute representatives gave Solutions Summit attendees a wealth of new strategies for expanding revenue within pharmacy businesses.
