American Pharmacists Month: Pharmacy Technology Supports Efficient Services, Profitability

Nicole Pezzino, PharmD, BCACP, BC-ADM, CDCES, discusses the opportunities incorporating pharmacy technology can create for pharmacies and their businesses.

As health care technology continues to evolve in the pharmacy, it is becoming an enabler of clinical practice. While technology has transformed the way pharmacies dispense medications, it has since gone well beyond that, allowing for pharmacists to provide a greater breadth of clinical services.

“We need solid reporting. We need budgeting tools. We need technology that really makes that possible,” Nicole Pezzino, PharmD, BCACP, BC-ADM, CDCES, clinical pharmacy consultant with RedSail Technologies, told Drug Topics. “On the purpose side, freeing up workflow allows pharmacists to expand to those services that I hear them so often talking about. Maybe it's having that time for vaccines, point-of-care testing, chronic disease management, diabetes self-management education support, or diabetes prevention program services.”

Pezzino joined Drug Topics to celebrate American Pharmacists Month throughout October. In our interview with Pezzino, she discussed the continuously expanding pharmacy technology landscape and how it’s truly opening the door for pharmacy businesses. Through her role with RedSail Technologies and her extensive pharmacy industry background, she provided insights into technology’s ability to expand clinical services as well as pharmacists’ scopes.

In part 1 of our interview, Pezzino dives into the current state of pharmacy technology and how it’s moving fast beyond a medication dispensing assistant.

“Giving pharmacies and pharmacists back their time helps them to reduce stress,” she continued. “Once you really learn your technology and focus on patients, the why of what we do in pharmacy, that's where the magic happens.”
