American Pharmacists Month: Expanding Services Through Dedicated Pharmacy Clinic

Alyssa Mack, PharmD, pharmacist at Gibbs Pharmacy and Compounding Center in Tennessee, discusses her role in expanding clinical services within her practice.

Gibbs Pharmacy and Compounding Center in Lebanon, Tennessee, has been transforming the way pharmacists deliver care with the introduction of a clinic dedicated to providing clinical services.

“I think a good place to start with that would be with the COVID-19 pandemic,” Alyssa Mack, PharmD, pharmacist at Gibbs Pharmacy, told Drug Topics. “It was just a really pivotal time for pharmacists to show up and reinforce all that we can do as pharmacists. And I think we really did that.”

Aside from the unprecedented challenges the pandemic introduced to the greater health care sector, it was a time where pharmacists were able to highlight their value within the community. Since then, places like Gibbs Pharmacy and the pharmacists working there have been exponentially improving care and providing convenient access to necessary clinical services.

From being that community touch point for clinical care to filling in gaps from shutdown primary care offices, the model at Gibbs Pharmacy and its early success with a pharmacist-led care clinic has made a significant community impact in just its first 6 months.

“Tennessee is honestly a great state to work in as a pharmacist,” continued Mack. “We're pretty progressive with our laws, and they expanded our scope of practice last year. That has been really, really helpful to us for our clinical services.”

Learn from Mack, her experience at Gibbs Pharmacy, and how her businesses’ clinical care model can inspire community pharmacists all across the country that are looking to provide more valued care.
