American Pharmacists Month: AI Empowers Pharmacies Through Automation of Repetitive Tasks

Nicole Pezzino, PharmD, BCACP, BC-ADM, CDCES, discusses the emerging role of artificial intelligence in pharmacy and how it’s used alongside other developed technologies.

While the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most discussed topics in technology, finding new ways to engage with patients and personalize their care is also a key priority for pharmacists across the country. With AI’s integration into pharmacy practice amid other emerging technologies, pharmacists are now equipped with the proper tools for streamlining their day-to-day tasks.

“One of the areas is patient engagement technology,” Nicole Pezzino, PharmD, BCACP, BC-ADM, CDCES, clinical pharmacy consultant with RedSail Technologies, told Drug Topics. “Whether it be communication through texts, through emails and apps, I don't think that area has reached its full potential yet. There are so many opportunities in that space.”

In part 3 of our interview with Pezzino, she helped Drug Topics celebrate American Pharmacists Month by discussing the increased use of AI and other notable technologies in pharmacy practice. With the time AI is giving back to pharmacists, patients in communities nationwide can reap the benefits of the pharmacies utilizing AI to the best of their ability.

With companies like RedSail, as well as an industry-wide push to take better advantage of emerging technologies, pharmacies have the resources to provide more engaging care to their patients. However, with so many clinical and business-related hats that today’s pharmacists are now encouraged to wear, sifting through the proper technological hurdles can be challenging for pharmacy practices.

“The key to just remember when we're thinking about AI and where it is in pharmacy, in the community or wherever you're in practice, it's not here to replace pharmacists, but rather empower you as a pharmacist, empower you as a pharmacy, and give you the tools to help remove repetitive, time-consuming tasks,” she continued.
