2026 Hantavirus Outbreak: The Current Situation
Jeffery Goad, PharmD, MPH, president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, provided his expert perspectives on the ongoing hantavirus outbreak.
A hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has put public health officials and pharmacists on alert. Although experts are urging calm, they are also calling on pharmacy professionals to stay vigilant as the situation continues to unfold.
In an interview with infectious disease expert Jeffery Goad, PharmD, MPH, president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), he breaks down everything pharmacists need to know about the current outbreak, which as of early May had climbed to at least 11 confirmed cases and one probable case, with a case fatality rate approaching 40%.
The outbreak traces back to a couple who contracted the Andes strain of hantavirus—a variant known for rare but documented person-to-person transmission—during a month-long trip through Patagonia, Argentina.
For pharmacists, the most critical takeaway may be recognizing what the disease looks like before it turns severe. During the prodrome phase, hantavirus can mimic flu-like symptoms, such as fever, nausea, and GI upset, with few if any respiratory signals.
Goad advises pharmacists to ask patients presenting with these symptoms whether they have recently traveled to Argentina or had close contact with anyone from the impacted cruise vessel. He also cautions against recommending nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or aspirin for these patients, given hantavirus’ hemorrhagic nature. Goad instead points to acetaminophen as the appropriate analgesic.
He also directly addresses inevitable comparisons to COVID-19, noting key differences in transmission, fatality rates, and what is known about the virus. Public health authorities are closely monitoring all exposed individuals, with a potential end to the outbreak expected sometime in mid-August, if no further transmission generations emerge.
